General Testing Info

On the date and time scheduled for your test, you will receive a link by email to access the test site. We will send you the link within 5 minutes from the scheduled time. For example, if your test is scheduled at 9 a.m., you will receive your link between 8:55 a.m. and 9:05 a.m. You will also receive a text message, provided we have your mobile phone in our records. Once you receive the link, please click on it. We use Zoom to connect. Once in the testing site, a proctor will welcome you and provide you further instructions on the administration of your test. If you have not received an email or a text message with the link to connect to the testing site 15 minutes after the scheduled time, please contact us at 1.800.625.6222

Interpreting

If you are taking the first live assessment, make sure you study all the material from the class manual -- lecture 1 through 4, and all the online laboratory practices from lecture 1 to 4. If you are taking the second live assessment, the assessment is on all the material in the class manual and on all the practices included in the online interpreting laboratory.

Translating

You will have to complete an assignment that is either places in your site or that your instructor will send you before the date scheduled for your live assessment.

The structure of the screening test is as follows: Three (3) simultaneous and one (1) consecutive.
Simultaneous 1 and 2 include general vocabulary at a speed of 140 words per minute to up to 160 words per minute. Simultaneous 3 includes general vocabulary plus a few legal terms at a speed of up to 150 words per minute. We are looking for accuracy. Any omissions, embellishment (additions to the original message), changes in meaning, pauses and hesitations,
inability to keep up with the original pace of the original, and hesitations will be penalized.

Final Exam

  The structure of the Final Examination is as follows: Four (4) simultaneous, two (2) consecutives, two (2) sight readings. The simultaneous sections are applicable to your future work in Immigration Court. They are provided at a speed that vary from 140 words per minute to 165 words per minute. We are looking for accuracy and proper usage of legal and immigration terminology. Any omissions, embellishment (additions to the original message), changes in meaning, pauses and hesitations, inability to keep up with the original pace of the original, and hesitations will be penalized. The consecutive section consists of typical testimony provided in any Individual Merits Hearing. The consecutive section includes segments that vary between 1 word and 45 words. We are looking for accuracy in the delivery. Any omissions, embellishment (additions to the original message), changes in meaning, pauses and hesitations, and overlapping’s will be penalized. The sight-reading section of the test includes two sight readings -- one from English into the Target Language and one from the target Language into English. They include formal terminology, including legal and immigration terms. We are looking for accuracy in the delivery, preservation of register and proper transfer of legal and immigration terms. Any omissions, embellishment (additions to the original message), changes in meaning, pauses and hesitations, and hesitations will be penalized.

Linguist (WRLS)

Writing 
Skills

You will be asked to answer a series of questions. You must use proper grammar, syntax, prepositions, spelling, preserve register of the original, written accents (if applicable), and proper style. Your answers must be at least 5 to 7 lines long. Your proctor will instruct you on the length of your answers.

Reading 
Skills

  You will read several passages and asked questions on those passages. The questions are multiple choice.

Listening & Speaking

You will have to answer several questions that vary in degree of difficulty. We are not looking for any correct answer. We are evaluating your fluency, understanding of the original,
register of vocabulary, syntax, flow, and style in the delivery.

You will be asked to interpret a dialogue between an English and a non-English speaker. You must use the consecutive mode. We are looking for accuracy in the delivery. Any omissions, embellishment (additions to the original message), changes in meaning, pauses and hesitations, and overlapping’s will be penalized. The length of the segments varies between 1 word and 45 words.

Simultaneous
Skills

You will have to interpret an audio using the simultaneous mode of interpretation. The speed of the original varies between 120 words per minute and 160 words per minute. The vocabulary is related to your job duties. We are looking for accuracy. Any omissions, embellishment (additions to the original message), changes in meaning, pauses and hesitations, inability to keep up with the original pace of the original, and hesitations will be penalized.

Typing test to determine if you have a minimum typing speed of 25 words per minute.

You will be asked to translate a series of documents from English into the Target Language and from the Target Language into English. We are looking for accuracy, preservation of register in the transfer, style, punctuation, syntax, grammar, written accents (if applicable), and style.
